What Is The Advantage Of 5-Axis CNC Machining?

By using the two additional axes, the machine cutter can reach any different angles of the workpiece closely, this makes it possible to manufacture very complicated arcs during the single setup.

This benefit is very obvious for the undercut machining as well as small drilling.

During the 5-axis machining, we can turn the cutter close to the workpiece surface, so it is possible to use a shorter cutting tool. With a shorter cutting tool, the feeding and speed can be higher, all this leads to faster material removal at last.

As we know, there are many types of cutters including flat end mill, bull nose end mill, ball end mill, and more. Among them, the flat end mill produces a flat-bottom cut that is the most efficient for material removal. In 5 axis machining, we can use a flat end mill cutter frequently, this also leads to higher cutting efficiency.

During the three-axis machining, the complex fixture is often required for workpiece fixing. Besides, a lot of parts machining will need more than one setup, one setup takes one type of fixture. Each fixture takes cost, more fixture takes more cost.

Five-axis machining has a strong capability to make complex shapes in a single setup with a simple fixing fixture. Thus, it can save a lot of costs from the workpiece fixture.

Accordion Content

As mentioned above, the 5-axis machine can use a shorter cutter, this creates less vibration during machining.

At the same time, it only needs one setup, this means the workpiece does not need to be removed during the whole machining progress.

Therefore, it helps to get more accurate machining, the CNC machined part is with higher precision.

Overview: What are the 5-axis CNC machining?

CNC milling is a particular form of precision machining in which a cutter removes material by moving into the workpiece at an angle. The movement of the cutter is controlled by computer instructions, allowing for extreme precision and repeatability. Milling is different to CNC turning, another popular CNC service in which a single-point cutting tool is used to cut the workpiece from block or bar materials while it is rotated at speed in a chuck. Unlike milling, CNC turning is generally used to create round or tubular shapes. CNC milling can be used for the rapid manufacture of either prototypes or end-use parts
Like other machining processes, CNC milling begins with designers creating a digital part using CAD (Computer-aided Design) software. The file is then converted into “G-Code,” which can be recognized by a CNC mill. CNC mills have a “worktable” and work holding device to keep a block of material — known as the “workpiece” — in place. The worktable may or may not move, depending on the style of the machine. During the CNC milling process, the rapidly rotating cutting tool makes contact with the workpiece, cutting away material. The tool moves according to the G-Code instructions so that cuts are made in the right places until the part is finished. Some CNC mills use moving worktables to create a greater number of cutting angles. CNC mills can cut through hard metals. This makes them more versatile than CNC routers, which are similar to 3-axis mills but less capable of penetrating hard materials.
5-axis machining is different from 3+2-axis machining. 5-axis CNC milling or machining involves continuous adjustments of the cutting tool along all five axes to keep the tooltip optimally perpendicular to the part. While 3+2 machining, also known as 5-sided machining or 5-axis indexed, it’s actually a 3-axis program with the cutting tool fixed at an angle depending on the two rotational axes. 3+2 machining needs to stop and start between each tool reorientation, while 5 axis machining does not require that, so its speed is greatly improved. In addition, 5 axis CNC machining suits for more applications due to its stronger capacities. Generally, 3+2 machining works for plane processing and can’t complete oblique or special machining, while 5 axis machining center is suitable for various contour surface machining.
